Landscape Character Assessment

Hertfordshire's landscape character assessment describes the variations in character between different types of landscape in the county.

It provides an evidence base for Local Plans and sets out strategies and guidelines for the protection, management and planning of the landscape.

Hierarchy of national, regional and local Landscape Character Areas (LCAs)

Natural England has produced 159 National Character Area profiles for the East of England, used to describe and shape objectives for the countryside, its planning and management.

In addition, Landscape East has produced the East of England Landscape Framework, which describes the landscape typology across this area.

Our Hertfordshire district and borough LCAs identify over 230 distinct local landscape character areas. Each area is mapped and includes an evaluation of its condition and robustness, and a strategy for influencing positive landscape change.
