Graduate scheme

Have you got what it takes to be a public sector leader of the future?

Our graduate scheme is so much more than a job.

  • From your first day, you'll have the opportunity to make a change.
  • You'll get personalised development focused on helping you build your career and become a leader.
  • You'll make a real difference on issues that matter and affect our residents, services and the whole organisation.

We're a modern, exciting place to work.

  • We deliver a broad range of services to more than 1.1 million people.
  • We're close to the communities we serve, working with a wide range of partners to provide services that people need.
  • We have a strong history of high quality graduates from the scheme going on to high profile roles.

We'll reward you for working with us.

  • £23,166 - £32,164 pa with access to a Local Government Pension Scheme
  • Flexible working with a generous holiday entitlement and Herts Rewards discounts
  • Career progression scheme and development programme

  • You’ll receive a personalised 2-3 year development programme which fast tracks graduates towards a senior management career.
  • First up, you’ll have a few weeks to settle in. You’ll be welcomed into the organisation as well as spending time  meeting your fellow grads and a peer buddy already on the scheme, as well as your placement manager.
  • You’ll start your first placement in one of our departments. Throughout the scheme, placements are based on what'll be most interesting and stretching for you.
  • You’ll see how our front line services work and how they are managed. You may spend time working in one of our external partners in the NHS, other local councils or voluntary sector organisations.
  • You’ll spend time with our senior leaders (including our Chief Executive and Leader of the Council) and work with a senior manager mentor to help you focus on developing your career path.
  • You will also get a range of formal training and development days and have the chance to mentor an apprentice as they take the early steps on their career journey.
