Entry 3 /Level 1 – Around 55 hours of lessons in total
Three elements are examined:
- Speaking and listening
- Reading - Skimming, scanning and close reading, fact, opinion and bias, audience and purpose of text, language and layout features.
- Writing - Knowing your audience and purpose, planning your answer, writing paragraphs, spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Speaking and Listening Entry 3
- Extracting Information followed by formal discussion
- Informal discussion
Speaking and Listening Level 1
- Formal discussion on an unfamiliar topic
- Presentation of a familiar topic
- Discussion of another person’s presentation or TED talk
Reading Entry 3
- 45-minute supervised assessment
Reading Level 1
- 60-minute invigilated exam
Writing Entry 3
- 40 minutes writing task + 15 minutes spelling task
Writing Level 1
- 1 hour 20 minutes invigilated exam

- Functional Skills maths will give you the skills to use maths effectively in three areas, number, handling data and measure, shape and space (MSS).
- The content will cover;
- Using numbers and the number system
- Using common measures, shapes, and space

Handling data and information
Learners/ You will need to demonstrate mathematical knowledge and skills and apply this to solve mathematical problems.
Level 1 and 2
The final exam is 1 hour 45 mins and is invigilated. It is split into two papers, a non-calculator and a calculator paper. Non-calculator is 25 minutes and calculator is 1 hour 20 minutes.

The final exam is a supervised assessment. It is split into two papers – a non-calculator and a calculator paper. Non-calculator is 25 minutes and calculator is 65 minutes.
