About diabetes

Diabetes is a lifelong condition that causes a person's blood sugar level to become too high. There are 2 main types:

  • Type 1 diabetes – where the body's immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin
  • Type 2 diabetes – where the body doesn't produce enough insulin, or the body's cells don't react to insulin. Type 2 diabetes is far more common.

I think my child may have diabetes

If you think your child has diabetes, visit your doctor.

It's important for diabetes to be diagnosed as early as possible because it gets worse if left untreated.

My child has diabetes

If your child has been diagnosed with diabetes, you'll be referred to the East and North Herts NHS Trust or the West Herts NHS Trust, depending where you live.
