Just like our mental and physical health, sexual health is something that we should all be talking about and looking after. Understanding and respecting our own and other people's bodies, gives us the confidence to establish good relationships.

Our bodies

Being proud of our bodies and feeling good is important for our overall wellbeing. Our bodies aren't something that we should be ashamed of, but if you are feeling worried there is lots of help and support out there.

Puberty

Puberty causes changes in our bodies that affect us all in different ways. All changes are normal and you can find out what to expect in more detail on childline.org.uk:

Puberty information and advice for girls.

Puberty information and advice for boys.

Contraception and safe sex

Amongst other things, looking after our sexual health means practising safe sex. If you have unprotected sex there is a chance that you could become pregnant or catch a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

Childline.org.uk have some great advice and information on the different types of contraception, how to use it and when to ask someone else to use it.

There are lots of different types of contraception and deciding which kind to use has to be a personal decision. Brook.org.uk has an online contraception tool that can help you explore the different methods.

Relationships

Forming close relationships with those around us helps us feel happy and supported. Relationships can be emotional or sexual, but should always be healthy. A healthy relationship is one where:

  • both people in the relationship feel supported
  • both people in the relationship can still have their own independence
  • both people in the relationship can communicate well with one another
  • both people in the relationship respect the other person's boundries

Identity and sexuality

Sexuality is about who we are attracted to and identity is about who we are and how we feel. Expressing how we feel about ourselves or somebody else can be difficult but you should never feel embarrassed.

If you are unsure about the way you feel or who you are attracted to, there are lots of services and organisations that can help you.
