Positive Behavioural Support

A community of practice for those supporting people with a learning disability in relation to behaviours that challenge.

This is where professionals, service users, providers, families and carers can find advice, research and resources relating to Positive Behavioural Support (PBS).

It's also where we can share experiences and learn from each other to improve things. We aim to:

  • gain a better understanding of how PBS is implemented in Hertfordshire
  • work towards improved consistency in the implementation of PBS
  • work together to develop PBS practice.

What is Positive Behavioural Support?

Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) has increasingly become the model of choice in supporting people with a learning disability and / or autism in relation to behaviours that challenge.

It is a person-centred framework for developing an understanding of behaviour rather than a single approach, treatment or philosophy.

The overall goal of PBS is to increase the individual’s quality of life, as well as those who support them.

Hertfordshire PBS Community of Practice Conference 2018

The first Hertfordshire PBS CoP Conference was held in 2018 which over 100 people attended.

The planned outcomes for the event were:

  1. to gain a deeper understanding about how PBS is being implemented with children and adults across Hertfordshire
  2. to share good practice examples of the application of the PBS model in practice
  3. to reflect on the implications of practice
  4. to provide an opportunity for those with an interest in PBS to network and share ideas.

Feedback from the event showed a high level of satisfaction with most attendees feeling that the objectives of the day were fully met.
