Guest blog: Mission EmployAble - Open for business!

Published 2 June 2023

Mission EmployAble: You may remember our last blog introducing ourselves - a new Hertfordshire based charity who run year-long supported internships for adults with an EHCP aged 19 - 25, living in Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Middlesex and beyond.

We are pleased to announce that our training cafe in Chorleywood is now up and running, and is proving to be a big success both with our interns, and our customers!

L to R Cass Langham training manager and intern Marina Walton (002)Training Manager Cassandra Langham with intern Marina, training in the cafe.

Marina, who is 19 years old and has a learning disability, started her supported internship with the Chorleywood-based charity Mission EmployAble in September 2023 -  and loves it.

‘I’m very sociable, so I enjoy greeting customers in the cafe and taking their orders.  I’m about to do work experience in a care home and really hope to get paid work in a home or in a shop when I finish my internship. I’ve also become great friends with interns from Chesham, Bushey and all over.’

Together with her fellow interns, she spends most of her training at the charity’s café, which has beautiful views of Chorleywood Common; and with support from Mission EmployAble, she also does regular shifts in local charity shops and in Sarratt community garden.

Mission EmployAble trains young adults with a learning disability to become ‘work-ready,’ via year-long supported internships in its own café on Chorleywood Common.

Applicants must be 19 - 25 year olds who are working at Entry Level 2 of functional English and Maths.

Young adults from Herts, Bucks and beyond, who have an EHCP and can travel independently by bus, taxi, Tube or SEND taxi, are welcome to apply for the scheme, which runs from September 2023 – July 2024.

Interns are trained in customer service, food preparation and using a till; and with partner organisations including a community garden, charity shops and care homes, where they learn a wide range of portable skills, while making friends and having fun at the same time.

Mission EmployAble continues to support interns once they finish their training, helping them to find paid work and offering support to them and their employer.
