We're inviting your views on our Draft Air Quality Strategy.
Consultation start date: 09 February 2026
Consultation closing date: 22 March 2026 (11.45pm)
Despite improvements in air pollutant sources (such as the levels of pollutants emitted from the tailpipe of vehicles), poor air quality is still the largest environmental risk to public health in the UK. Long term exposure to air pollution in England causes around 30,000 deaths per year.
Air quality affects everyone with some more at risk than others including our children, older adults, and those with underlying health conditions. The effects e.g., onset of cardiac arrest, can occur during elevated short term air pollution events, and through exposure to lower pollution levels over long periods.
The Hertfordshire County Council Air Quality Strategy was written in 2019. At the end of 2024, we carried out public engagement to help us understand the air quality issues that matter to residents and have since drafted a new strategy.
