We are proposing the introduction of a 20mph zone in the North & Central area of St Albans (including roads in New Greens, Batchwood and Bernards Heath)
Consultation closed date: 11 January 2026 (11.45pm)
The aim was to make it easier and safer for people walking and cycling and to improve safety for all road users by encouraging vehicle drivers to adopt appropriate and safe speeds, particularly around schools, community centres and on residential streets.
We have been asked to consider the introduction of a 20mph speed limit on Sandridge Road. We have assessed existing speed here and think that traffic calming on this road will be needed to ensure compliance with the proposed speed limit.
Road humps providing physical calming measures on Sandridge Road are proposed to reduce vehicle speeds and make access easier at key crossing points. The traffic calming may require upgrades to the street lighting. The aim is to enhance accessibility for families travelling to school and people going to the city centre, the recreation ground, shops and using the Green Ring.
