Title: Twenty is plenty for Verulam Road
Petition Overview: Speeding traffic is a priority concern of residents of Verulam Road, St Albans and the streets leading off Verulam Road. We the undersigned petition the council to extend the 20mph St Albans City centre speed limit zone to the whole of Verulam Road, from the current position next to the Brickyard bar down to the junction with Folly Lane. A cost effective relocation of signage would provide for a safer environment for pedestrians, residents, playing field users and motorists avoiding: 1. near misses when cars turn out on to Verulam Rd. 2. domestic pet deaths. 3. vehicle/pedestrian near misses at crossings. It would also have significant quality of life benefits and enable removal of large amounts of street signage on entrances to streets off Verulam Road.

Petitioner Name: Verulam Road Residents Association
E-Petition – extend the 20mph St Albans City Centre speed limit zone to the whole of Verulam Road The concerns raised within this petition have been considered by officers, and discussed with Chris White and Sandy Walkington, the two local county councillors whose divisions abut Verulam Road. The lead petitioner, understood to be the Chairman of Verulam Road Residents Association, has also been contacted to open discussions about their traffic concerns. Hertfordshire County Council has not currently identified Verulam Road as a priority for traffic management improvement works within its core Integrated Transport Programme or as a site requiring further investigation. Tthe County Council in partnership with St Albans District Council developed an Urban Transport Plan for St Albans. The purpose of the Plan was to develop a range of schemes and interventions, across all modes of transport, to address existing problems in the area. The Plan identified a number of transport improvement schemes for further consideration over the life of the plan to help deal with existing and possible future traffic issues; these are then prioritised and developed subject to funding being available. Unfortunately, Verulam Road was not identified as one of those priority sites. However, Local County Councillors Chris White and Sandy Walkington are aware of the concerns of residents and jointly identified a need to initially make improvements to the zebra crossing at the junction of Verulam Road and Lower Dagnall Street, which they supported through recommendation of funding from the Highways Locality Budget. These works were completed earlier this year and saw the crossing made more visible to approaching drivers by installing recent LED technology into the flashing beacons. Both County Councillors are exploring opportunities for further improvement works and consider Verulam Road amongst their priorities for their respective divisions. They have jointly asked Council officers to undertake a speed survey funded again from the Highway Locality Budget. This data, when captured, will be analysed and combined with observations made from site, discussed with both Councillors to determine and agree the next course of action.
