My experience as a Supported Intern

Hi, my name is Marcus, and I'm on a Supported Internship programme at North Hertfordshire College. In this blog, I will be sharing with you my experience working with the Local Offer team at Hertfordshire County Council.

What is the Local Offer?

The Local Offer lets parents and young people know what special educational needs and disabilities services are available in Hertfordshire, and who can access them.

What I enjoyed being a Supported Intern

Every Wednesday and Thursday, I enjoyed working closely with Laura and Claudia, the two wonderful people that worked with me during my time here at Hertfordshire County Council and they have made me feel included when it comes to the working world.

From learning new systems, to Laura teaching me how to code HTML without using AI, I have built skills and knowledge while working here. I have had fun working with the team during my placement and I have been taught a lot.

What tasks did I do?

Task-wise, I have been:

  • scheduling posts,
  • adding events to the website and
  • creating blogs (such as this one)

so I can keep things up to date and keep the followers of SEND Local offer in the loop. Whether it's Halloween or Christmas events, or the BEST festival in Stevenage on the first Saturday of May each year (You know what I'm talking about), there’s always something for everyone in Hertfordshire.

I have also collaborated with the Experts by Experience team with the 6 ambitions project.

What support did I receive?

Laura and Claudia have helped me use new software and technologies that I thought would be hard, and they have helped train me on how to post events, create social media posts, and create blogs in a professional standard. They have also given me some instructions on how to do certain tasks, as well as different tasks I've never done before. They've walked me through what I need to do, and amended some mistakes (because everyone makes mistakes. We are all human, right?), and we worked together to solve problems and make things right. A group of walkers smiling after a health walk
