Hertfordshire County Council

We're looking at alternative uses of the disused railway line between Watford and Croxley, following the cancellation of the Metropolitan Line Extension project.

Atkins, Systra UK and WSP (previously Wood Group) were commissioned to do a feasibility study and develop proposals for innovative options suitable for the disused railway corridor. This piece of work was building on the cancelled Metropolitan Line Extension (MLX) Alternatives report (PDF 15.7MB).

Latest updates

Atkins have taken the study further looking more in-depth at the options available for the disused rail corridor between Croxley and Watford. This work looks at a variety of modal and active travel solutions that are being shortlisted.

Wider area improvements for sustainable travel are also being looked at as part of the scheme to promote sustainable transport in and around the disused alignment. This is an important aspect of this work ensuring a solid future for the public transport and active travel in the area. The project team is working closely with Local Cycling Walking Improvement Plan (LCWIP) and Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) teams to achieve this.

Watford Borough Council’s, Three Rivers District Council’s and Networks Rail’s continued commitment to protect the land that provides a link from Croxley to Watford Junction opens the door to new ways of using the corridor in line with our vision to create a cleaner, greener, and healthier Hertfordshire benefiting residents, visitors and commuters.
