Care homes

Choosing a care home

It's important to find a care home that's right for you or for the person who's going to live there.

Not all care homes are the same. Some offer accommodation and help with personal care, such as washing and dressing. Other care homes offer nursing care, as well as the basic help.

There are also other care homes that offer extra care and support, often due to dementia.

Herts Care Search is a great place to start if you're considering a residential or nursing home in Hertfordshire for yourself, a family member or friend, either for a short break or for the longer term. You can search for vacancies in homes by location, type of care, and facilities appropriate to your needs. You can also browse a list of care homes in the area.

Age UK has a checklist of important things to ask care home staff when visiting a care home. The NHS also has some good advice on choosing a care home.

Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspects all care homes regularly to check the standard of care and quality of life you or your loved one will receive at a particular home.

Paying for a care home

Everyone has to pay something towards their care home but how much you pay will depend on your financial situation, what care home you choose and the level of services you need.

We can have a chat with you about your needs and your day-to-day life.  We can then agree whether a care home is right for you and how much you may need to pay.

We call this an assessment.
