Title: Garden Walk School Crossing
Petition Overview: Provide a zebra or pelican crossing in Garden Walk near to The Greneway Middle School to ensure the safety of all children who attain the school and at present find it very difficult to cross safely given the amount of vehicles that use the road.
Relevant Area(s): Not Specified

Petitioner Name: Sarah Day
We receive numerous requests to install safety features throughout the County. Our Road Safety Unit monitors collisions and prioritises hazardous sites based on collision history. We use the results of our analysis to identify and prioritise the sites we will investigate and, where appropriate, carry out engineering work, so that whatever work we do maximises the reduction of collisions which cause personal injuries on the County’s road network. We would of course like to address all safety issues on our roads however, because we have limited funding, we have to direct our resources to those areas where our work has the greatest potential to reduce the number and severity of collisions that occur. The collision records have been checked and these records show that there has been no recorded personal injury collision along the whole length of Garden Walk in the latest 3 year period (August 2014 – July 2017 inclusive).Taking into consideration that there is not currently a personal injury collision issue at this location, it is unlikely that this site would attract core funding from the County Council’s annual road safety budget for the foreseeable future. A further potential source of funding is through Hertfordshire County Council’s Safer Routes to School (SRTS) budget. Your request for a pedestrian crossing in Garden Walk will be added to the potential schemes for consideration in future budget years. However, it should be noted that this location would need to be ranked against all other SRTS potential schemes throughout the County and even if it ranked highly enough, a study would be required to ascertain whether or not a formal crossing is feasible at this location in terms of current design criteria etc. In conjunction with the Schools in Garden Walk, Hertfordshire County Council’s Traffic Access & Road Safety Team (TARS) are actively seeking a School Crossing Patrol for Garden Walk.Your concerns will be discussed with County Councillor Fiona Hill to see if there are any low cost works that could be undertaken using her Highway Locality Budget. In the meantime, Hertfordshire County Council will continue to actively seek to recruit a School Crossing Patrol person for this location.
