Title: Safety improvements needed at the Junction at North Road, Stevenage/Graveley Road (B197)
Petition Overview: Safety improvements needed at the junction at North Road, Stevenage/ Graveley Road (B197). This petition is to highlight the safety concerns for road users and pedestrians at the junction where North Road, Stevenage meets Graveley Road, (B197). This already dangerous road junction was changed in 2012. These changes appear to have turned the junction into an accident black spot, the confusing layout, inadequate lighting and increased traffic volume have resulted in an increased number of traffic collisions. The frequent traffic collisions causing road closure and diversions impacting on road users and the local economy and adding pressure to an already over-stretched A&E department at Lister Hospital. Although no fatalities have been recorded there have been many reports of injuries. This junction has seen an increase in volume of traffic due to the huge expansion to the Lister Hospital and because of the increased congestion on the A1 (M) motorists are using the Graveley Road as a ‘rat run’ to avoid the motorway traffic. This petition is hoping to show the strength of feeling of road users and pedestrians of the dangerous layout and the safety improvements required to prevent further accidents, injuries and to reduce congestion and disruption to the area. We hope to achieve safety improvements, including: Improved road, layout, Improved road signage (minimal signage at present), Adequate street lighting leading up to and at the junction (there is no lighting at present), traffic calming measures to slow the traffic (at present it is 40mph at the junction).

The county council are aware of concerns about this junction and it appears on the ‘hazardous sites’ list of locations in the county. Hertfordshire County Council's road safety team have considered the detail of each of the accidents recorded at the B197 North Road/ High Street, Graveley, junction and have made recommendations accordingly. Proposals to modify the alignment and improve the clarity of the road markings at this location have been developed and the contract documentation prepared for delivery within the current financial year. Our expectation is to implement the scheme in the school summer holidays (Aug 2016). Once these works are completed, there will be a period of monitoring to determine whether additional measures are required.
