Request transport and accident data

We hold a comprehensive range of authoritative transport datasets and analytical outputs.

 

 
What we can provide

We can supply a wide range of transport data and analysis, including:

  • Transport modelling outputs (including COMET strategic model data)
  • Traffic data (classified counts, turning counts, peak/off peak flows)
  • Collision and road safety data
  • Trip distribution analysis
  • Journey time and routing analysis
  • Place and Movement assessments
  • Accessibility and movement analysis

We also provide an interactive map of currently available traffic data, helping teams quickly understand existing coverage and minimise the need for new surveys.

Collision data

Our data source

Collision records are sent to us by the Police. We code and validate the records then add them to our database.

The dataset only includes collisions in line with the Department for Transport’s definition, known as Stats19. GOV.UK - Stats19 gudiance.

We only have records for roads within Hertfordshire. A GB national dataset is available via the Department for Transport

What we can provide

  • specific date ranges, areas, user groups and queries
  • PDF plans or Excel listings
  • collision descriptions and contributory factors.

Who we can share it with

We are only permitted to share collision descriptions and contributory factors with parties engaged in collision investigation, remedial works and safety engineering. This includes road safety professionals preparing transport assessments, transport statements and road safety audits.

We will ask you to sign and adhere to our confidentiality agreement.

We will never share any other personal information held within stats19.

These requests fall under the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 and are subject to charges, to cover the cost of collating and formatting data from external organisations. If you are working on behalf of Hertfordshire County Council (you have been commissioned by us), this service is free.

How up to date is it?

Data is available from 1980 to within the last few months.

We aim to ‘release’ new records monthly when the vast majority of collisions for that month have been received from the Police. We aim to include collisions up to three months prior to the month end.

The national dataset is updated once per year for the previous calendar year around late summer, so it is not as current as the local data.

There are very minor differences between our local data and that held by national datasets, due to auditing changes and post end of year updates.

Benefits for developers

We can support developers and their consultants with transport assessments, travel plans, modelling and wider transport evidence for new developments.

Using our data can be critical in reducing the time, cost and uncertainty associated with data collection and validation, while ensuring your evidence is fully aligned with the expectations of the Highway Authority.

By using our datasets, developers benefit from:

  • using the same evidence base as the Highway Authority
  • reduced challenge to assumptions and modelling inputs
  • faster agreement on trip rates, distribution and impacts
  • less need for additional surveys or re work
  • greater certainty and confidence throughout the planning process

Our fees

Transport and accident data is provided on a cost recovery basis, with fees reflecting the type of data requested, level of analysis required, and any bespoke processing.

In most cases, the cost of purchasing our data is significantly lower than commissioning new surveys, bespoke data collection, or repeated third party validation, and can help avoid later requests for additional information.

We can provide details of fees on request, and the team will always help identify the most proportionate and cost effective data package for your proposal.

We recommmend early engagement to ensure the correct data is used from the outset and to avoid unnecessary delay later on.

Collision data requests

For clarity, please make sure your request outlines the following:

  • The date range you require (e.g. 1st January 2020 to 31st Dec 2023 Inclusive)
  • The area of interest (this can be a polygon using shapefile or DXF, an image or detailed description
  • Whether you need an output plan
  • Whether you need the collision descriptions and road safety (contributory) factors
  • The purpose of your request and whom you are asking on behalf of – this is to establish whether the nature of your work relates to collision investigation, remedial works and or safety engineering.
  • Evidence that you are working on behalf of HCC if applicable.
  • Whether you would like a PDF listing, an Excel listing or something different.

 
Payment

After you receive your quote, if you wish to go ahead:

  • Consultants - please supply a purchase order, clearly stating your order, your company name, contact details and full invoicing details. We will invoice you at a later date.
  • Public - we will send you instructions to pay online by credit or debit card.
