School-age childcare

Wraparound childcare

Wraparound childcare is before and after-school care available to primary school-aged children. It is run by schools or childcare providers during term time, but may also be available outside of the school term as a holiday club.

This childcare usually takes place at schools, childminders' homes or local places like community centres. It is different from 'out-of-school' activities or school clubs that happen less often, only when resources allow, and can be one-time events.

If appropriate wraparound childcare isn't available

You can email or write to your school with details of:

  • the type of childcare you need
  • your child’s age
  • the preferred days/times
  • any specific needs.

Make sure you also complete any surveys your school runs about wraparound childcare.

Breakfast clubs

Most schools offer childcare before the school day starts, and many currently charge for this service. To help cover these costs, you may be able to use financial support such as Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit Childcare.

Schools that have joined the Free Breakfast Clubs programme offer at least 30 minutes of free childcare and breakfast before the school day starts.

If your school plans to offer a free breakfast club, it will contact you and explain how to sign up.

Holiday schemes

Holiday childcare programmes provide fun and engaging activities for children during the school holidays. Ask your school what's on offer.

Hertfordshire’s Holiday Activity Programme provides a range of fun experiences including physical activity, enrichment, a healthy meal and snacks for eligible children.

Financial support

Childcare providers set their own prices, so the cost of childcare can vary.

Use the childcare checker to find out what government support you may be eligible for, including:

  • Tax Free Childcare
Eligible families can save up to £2,000 per year for each child under 11, or up to £4,000 per year for each disabled child under 17.
  • Universal Credit Childcare
Eligible families can save up to 85% of their childcare costs for children up to 16 years old.
