Plug-in solar panels

Plug-in solar panels can help reduce energy costs but incorrect installation, damaged equipment or poor placement can increase the risk of fire and electric shock.

Plug-in solar panels are becoming increasingly popular as a way of generating electricity at home. These systems are designed to connect directly to a power socket and can be installed on balconies, gardens, patios or other suitable outdoor spaces.

 

Check you have permission

If you rent your home or live in a managed property, speak to your landlord, housing provider, freeholder or managing agent before purchasing or installing a plug-in solar panel system. Permission may be required under tenancy agreements or building management arrangements.

 

Buy from reputable suppliers

Only purchase equipment from trusted manufacturers and retailers. Look for UKCA or CE markings, which indicate the product meets recognised safety standards. Poor-quality or counterfeit products may be more likely to fail, overheat or cause electrical faults.

 

Choose a safe location

Solar panels and associated equipment should not obstruct escape routes or access for emergency services.

Don't install solar panels where they could block:

  • shared balconies
  • walkways and access routes
  • windows used as emergency exits
  • fire escape routes.

Keep combustible materials well away from solar panels, inverters, batteries and electrical connections.

 

Install safely

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions when installing, operating and maintaining the system. Incorrect installation can increase the risk of fire or electric shock.

Where electrical work is required, such as fitting an outdoor socket, use a qualified and competent electrician.

If connecting to an outdoor socket:

  • ensure the socket is suitable for outdoor use
  • use a weatherproof installation with an appropriate IP rating
  • check the socket and wiring are in good condition.

Only use mounting brackets, fixings and accessories recommended by the manufacturer.

 

Battery and electrical safety

Battery storage systems can present additional fire risks if not correctly designed, installed and maintained. If considering battery storage, seek advice from a competent installer and ensure all equipment complies with relevant safety standards.

Never:

  • connect plug-in solar panels through extension leads
  • use adaptors or multi-socket extensions
  • overload electrical sockets
  • alter plugs, cables, inverters or any other part of the system.

Damaged or overloaded electrical connections can overheat and cause fires.

 

Protect cables

Regularly inspect cables and keep them free from damage.

Don't:

  • trap cables in doors or windows
  • run cables underneath carpets or floor coverings
  • leave cables exposed to sharp edges or areas where they could be crushed.

 

When to stop using

Stop using the system immediately if you notice:

  • burning smells
  • excessive heat
  • buzzing or crackling sounds
  • visible damage
  • repeated electrical tripping

If you suspect a fault, disconnect the system if it is safe to do so and contact the installer or supplier for advice.

Solar panels can continue generating electricity during daylight hours, even when switched off indoors.

 

If there is a fire

  1. Get everyone out and stay out.
  2. Call 999 immediately.
  3. Tell the operator that solar panels are installed at the property.
  4. Do not touch the system or any damaged electrical equipment.

 

When to call 999

Call 999 immediately if you:

  • smell burning coming from the equipment
  • see smoke or fire
  • believe electrical equipment is overheating
  • feel there is an immediate risk to life or property.
