Hertfordshire County Council

We are Hertfordshire County Council

We provide hundreds of services to our 1.2 million residents with care and compassion. You trust us to make Hertfordshire a great place to live and work.

We are keeping you moving

We look after more than 3,000 miles of roads. We carry out more than 1,000 maintenance and improvement schemes each year.

Every winter, our fleet of gritters are on call around the clock to keep you moving when the temperatures drop.

Our improved cycle paths and walking routes encourage residents to walk, cycle and scoot too.

Gritting routes

Winter roads self-help – you can apply for salt to grit your own roads, until 31 October 2024.

We are your bedtime story

We run a thriving library service in the heart of our communities. Whether it’s a bedtime story for your little one or holiday reading to take to the beach, you borrow 5 million items each year.

You also attend events for all age groups, from baby rhyme time to slipper swaps.

We are your helping hand

We provide essential care and support to over 30,000 adults every year. The helping hand we offer supports people to live independently in their own homes.

We support people and their unpaid carers with access to employment, appropriate housing, community support, personalised care and assistive technology.

We are the first people you call

Our fire and rescue service responds to 10,000 emergencies each year, including fires and road traffic collisions.

We work with schools, care homes and businesses to reduce the risk of emergencies and help keep you safe.

Our Trading Standards team supports local businesses with advice and support, protecting communities from dodgy dealers, counterfeit products and scams.

We are all walks of life

Our public health services help people make healthy choices and lifestyle changes, reducing their risk of long-term illness and helping them to live a long life well.

We run 3,000 free health walks across Hertfordshire each year, welcoming people from all walks of life to take part in physical exercise while socialising.

We are the place you call home

1.2 million people and 58,000 businesses call Hertfordshire home, and that number will continue to grow.

With an increased need for housing in the county, we are working with partners to create vibrant, well-designed and sustainable communities with a good balance of jobs, homes, and local services.

Sustainable growth

We are your greener future

We make sure Hertfordshire’s wildlife and environment flourish so everyone can enjoy our precious green spaces.

We maintain footpaths, bridleways, nature reserves, rivers and woodlands.

We are helping to plant 1.8 million trees and we are working towards making our operations carbon neutral by 2030.

Sustainable Hertfordshire

We are here for every step

Our health visitors make around 11,000 new birth visits each year. Along with our family centres, they're there for the crucial steps in your child’s development, advising, reassuring, and supporting parents.

Working with families, we provide access to early years education and childcare, helping every child in Hertfordshire to have the best start in life.
