Coroner's records

Coroner's records may contain inquest papers, post mortem reports, sudden death files and other case papers.

The records we keep for each district are:

  • Bishops Stortford, 1953 – 1958
  • Hemel Hempstead, 1877 – 1901; 1908 - 1959; 1988 - 1996.
  • Hertford, 1827 – 1840; 1870 – 1883; 1904; 1912; 1934 - 1996
  • Hitchin, 1960 – 1996
  • St Albans, 1939; 1942 – 1945; 1952-1974
  • Watford, 1944 – 1974
  • St Albans and Watford, 1975 – 1996

The earliest records are indexed on Hertfordshire Names Online and date from 1827 to 1933.

Inquest records from the 1980s onwards are dealt with by the Coroner's Service.

Earlier Coroner's records may be held in the archives but could be subject to access restrictions.

Where inquests have not survived, local newspapers might help your research.
