Historical hospital records

Some catalogues listing hospital records are available to view online.  They are grouped under 4 main headings:

  • Isolation hospitals (established by district councils)
  • Mental hospitals (established by Hertfordshire County Council)
  • Voluntary hospitals (maintained by private subscription and endowment)
  • Workhouse hospitals (established by Boards of Guardians).

Other sources include Boards of Guardians records, nursing associations, county and district councils, Quarter Sessions (magistrates) and health visitor records.

However, not all of the catalogues are available online yet.  Contact us if you can't find what you're looking for.

Some hospital records can't be viewed in person.  Find out about access restrictions.

You can also use the National Archives hospital records database to find dates and locations of hospitals and their records.

Search the library catalogue for books on the county's hospitals.
