Report all fly tipping to your local council, whether your saw it in progress or not.
Record as many details as possible:
- exact location
- date and time that you discovered the fly tipping
- details and photos of the items.
If you saw the fly tipping happen:
- vehicle's registration number and details
- description of the fly tippers (and photos if possible)
- direction they were travelling.
Don't put yourself at risk
- If you witness fly tipping in progress, stay out of the way and don't confront the perpetrators.
- Don't touch the waste, as it might be contaminated.
You should report it to your district or borough council, but they are not legally required to investigate flytipping on private property.
After reporting the flytipping, please try to secure it with a temporary fence so the evidence is not disturbed.
As a private land owner, it is your responsibility to ensure the flytipped waste is legally disposed of, including any costs. If the flytippers are prosecuted you may be refunded your clean-up costs.
How to dispose of it
Your responsibility as a home or business owner
- Any waste not collected by your bin collection service needs to be disposed of legally.
- If your waste is disposed of illegally, by you or by a waste carrier on your behalf, you could face an unlimited fine, community order or prison sentence.
